Kühne joined the family business in 1958 and became Chairman of the Management Board in 1966. He was appointed CEO of Kuehne+Nagel International AG in 1975 and served as Chairman of the Board of Directors from 1992 to 2011, later becoming Honorary Chairman. Over more than five decades, he transformed Kuehne+Nagel from a regional freight forwarder into one of the world’s largest logistics groups, playing a defining role in the evolution of global supply chains and the modern logistics real estate market.

Beyond Kuehne+Nagel, Kühne was one of Germany’s most influential transport and logistics investors. According to Forbes, his holdings were worth more than $44 billion. He held major stakes in Lufthansa, Hapag‑Lloyd, Brenntag and mobility operator Flix, exerting significant influence across Europe’s transport, shipping and industrial sectors. In 2008, Kühne led a consortium to acquire Hapag‑Lloyd’s Hamburg‑based container shipping business from TUI, preventing its absorption into a global rival and preserving a key pillar of Germany’s maritime economy. He later acquired 20% of the voting rights in Lufthansa, becoming one of the airline’s most powerful shareholders.

His investments extended into real estate through logistics infrastructure, port‑related assets and support for major urban development initiatives in Hamburg and Switzerland. Kühne was also a prominent cultural and civic benefactor, backing projects such as the Elbphilharmonie concert hall and investing heavily in Hamburger SV.

Stefan Paul, CEO of Kuehne+Nagel, said the news had “deeply saddened” the organisation, noting that Kühne “embodied logistics and global trade like no other.”
