Akademiska Hus is investing around SEK 500 mln (€45 mln) to construct new student housing called Mira at Gibraltarvallen on Campus Johanneberg in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Mira, Gothenburg
This project will create much-needed accommodation for over 300 students.
Mira will be an eight-story building containing 101 apartments designed for 309 residents. The ground floor will feature common areas like a laundry room and bicycle parking. This initiative aims to alleviate the current student housing shortage.
Akademiska Hus has a block rental agreement with Stiftelsen Chalmers Studenthem, which will then rent the apartments to students. The housing will include classic student studios, duo apartments for two people, and larger "coliving" apartments for up to six individuals, each with a private bedroom but shared kitchen, living room, and bathroom.
The Mira building will encompass approximately 9,300 m2. Its design will incorporate recycled brick facades, a wooden frame, French balconies, and a glazed entrance facing Gibraltargatan. To enhance energy efficiency, solar cells and heat recovery from the grocery store will be installed. Construction is slated to begin in early 2026, with potential occupancy starting in the winter of 2027. In addition to student housing, the ground floor will also accommodate a grocery store and smaller commercial spaces.
Anna Alsborger, property director at Akademiska Hus, said: "We know that the demand for student housing is high around the country, which is why Akademiska Hus is working hard to create more housing on campus. It is important to us, and in this case, Gothenburg as an attractive student city. Housing also contributes to a more open campus that comes alive around the clock."
Joakim Wallin, CEO of Stiftelsen Chalmers Studenthem, commented: "Campus proximity is one of the students' strongest wishes when it comes to housing and a key to attracting talents to both Chalmers and Gothenburg."
Linda Teng, concept manager for student and researcher housing at Akademiska Hus, added: "Coliving has many advantages. It promotes social community and prevents the loneliness that many students feel when they move to a new city. In addition, it is good from a sustainability perspective when functions and spaces are shared."
